Potential Host FAQ
Do I really need to live in LA?
Yes, we need you in LA for the regular recording schedule. If you don’t live there but have plans to relocate, you’re welcome to audition.
Is this a full-time gig?
No. We’ll need you for a few hours every week starting in January 2025. We’re recording two episodes at a time, so while this won’t be a full-time job, it will be a regular commitment. We’re aiming for the program to become a full gig after its initial six week run.
Outside of filming (and run-throughs before filming), we also ask for the host to spend some time in the writers room. We’d like for you to meet with our writers online a couple times during the six week run to work on sketch ideas, to write a couple bits you’d want to appear on the show, and to pre-approve all scripts (monologue jokes and sketches) before each episode is shot. You are welcome to contribute as much as you want.
How much am I getting paid?
You will definitely be paid, and while you might not be getting a house in the hills from this gig (yet), you’ll earn more than “exposure” (we promise). Specific details about pay will be discussed with finalists.
What qualities are you looking for in a host?
We’re looking for someone who is funny, imaginative, likable, and at least a little weird.
We want someone who is collaborative with guests and uplifts whomever they interview, instead of just looking for places to insert one-liners. Supportive energy is preferable over cynical energy.
We want someone who is creative and can put forward fun original bits that showcase their stellar personality.
We want someone who is not divisive. We’re sure your political opinions are great (and always 100% correct), but we prefer this to be a show where people can take a break from the fussing and the feuding.
What should the monologue be about?
The topic is up to you! We're leaning away from being politically charged (we want Tomorrow Night to be welcoming to a wide audience), but whether you rant about current events, crack jokes about your life, or break down why pizza should be its own food group, we want to see your style and personality shine through. Keep it 2-3 minutes and aim for laughs.
What’s considered an “Original bit?”
Think about Conan’s "In the Year 2000" or Letterman’s "Top 10 List"—classic, signature bits that became show staples. Your bit should be original to you, something that could become a recurring segment. Feel free to be as innovative as you’d like (you won’t lose points for bold, arguably weird choices). Again this should be somewhere between 2-4 minutes.
Who can I interview?
Anyone (or anything). You can interview a friend, a pet, a cardboard cutout, or even yourself (if you can get you). We just want to see how you handle the “talk show interview” format—can you make it funny and interesting, no matter whom you’re talking to? And yes, try to hit the 2-3 minute sweet spot.
How long should my video demo be?
The total video should be around 6-9 minutes. We’re asking for a 2-3 minute monologue, a 2-4 minute bit, and a 2-3 minute interview. Keep it concise while showing off your hosting skills!
What happens after I submit my demo?
Once you’ve filled out the form and uploaded your audition, we’ll review submissions and get back to finalists by mid-November. If we like what we see, we’ll reach out for the next steps in the process.
When is the deadline for submissions?
All videos must be submitted by 11:59pm PT on November 10th, 2024. To ensure you meet the deadline, we recommend not waiting until the last minute; our servers can handle only so many under-the-wire uploads.
How will Tomorrow Night be recorded?
Starting in January 2025, we’ll film two episodes per same-day recording session in a black box theater in LA with a live studio audience.
What kind of audience is Tomorrow Night aimed at?
We’re looking to capture the spirit of classic late-night talk shows (think Conan, Letterman, Ferguson) with a modern twist, aimed at comedy nerds, college students, and anyone who loves witty, unpredictable humor.
Who will see my demo? Is there anything else I should know?
Your video will not be shown to anyone outside of Cideshow’s selection committee without your permission. It will just be a panel of us suits (6-8 people) watching.
Have fun with this! We’re not looking for perfection—we want a glimpse of your personality, your sense of humor, and how you think on your feet. Show us your favorite version of yourself.
